Debunked by Fether: 8 Common Skincare Myths Part 1
There are a lot of myths and misconceptions when it comes to skincare. People often believe things that simply aren't true. But fear not, friends, at Fether, we love researching these things and just how much truth they hold. With that said, below, we debunk eight myths in what will be part of a more extensive series of blogs on skincare myths and facts. Why? So you have the best possible information on how to get healthy, glowing skin without resorting to ridiculous measures!
1. If Your Skin is Dark, You Need Less Sunscreen
FALSE! No matter what skin tone you have, sunscreen is a must. Ultraviolet rays can damage your skin and make it age faster than usual. Everyone needs to protect their skin from the sun and use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. People with darker skin tones often avoid sunscreen, but they should be just as diligent about it. Read more on the importance of SPF here.
2. More Expensive Products are Better For Your Skin
FALSE! Expensive skincare products aren't necessarily better than cheaper ones. It's all about finding the right product for your skin type and what works best for you. Some expensive products may work well, but plenty of affordable brands can provide just as good results. Because of things like brand reputation, the price tag on an item isn't always an indication of effectiveness or quality.
3. A Tan is Healthy
FALSE! A tan results from damage to your skin and is your skin's way of protecting it from further damage. The sun's ultraviolet rays can cause sunburns, premature aging, and even cancer. Tanning beds are also dangerous (even more so than the sun) as they too, expose you to harmful UV radiation. So even though the glow from a tan may seem healthy, it's not actually good for you and should be avoided.
4. You Can't Workout With Makeup On
FALSE! This is a personal preference; some people prefer to work out without makeup, while others don't mind wearing it. As long as you choose a foundation that won't clog your pores and contains SPF for sun protection, you should be able to wear makeup during your workout. Read our 4 post workout skin care tips here.
5. Applying Eye Cream to the Entire Face will Help with wrinkles
FALSE! Eye cream is specially formulated for the delicate skin around your eyes and should only be used on that area. Using it on other parts of your face can cause irritation or clog pores and make breakouts worse. It's best to keep eye cream separate from your other skincare products and use it only on the skin around your eyes. Learn more about eye cream here.
6. Face exercises get rid of wrinkles
FALSE! Face exercises may help to tone the muscles in your face, but they won't get rid of wrinkles. The only way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles is to use anti-ageing skincare products that contain actrive ingredients like Collagen, Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid. You can also try laser treatments for a more dramatic result.
7. You Don't Need To Change Your Skincare Routine When It's Cold Outside
FALSE! As the season's change, so should your skincare routine. During winter, you should switch to a more moisturising and robust skincare regime that will protect your skin from harsh weather conditions while gently cleansing it without stripping away natural oils. You'll also want to increase your use of moisturisers and use a heavier cream. Learn more about winter skincare tips here.
8. You Don't Need To Wash Your Face at Night
FALSE! Washing your face before bed is absolutely essential for healthy skin. During the day, dirt and other impurities can build up on your skin, so it's essential to use a cleanser every night to eliminate them and keep your pores clean. Without regular cleansing, you're at risk of breakouts and clogged pores.
